Neighborhood Fun Facts
Originally farmland for the Dutch settlers in the 17th century, this neighborhood consisted of two sister-villages well into the 19th century: Yellow Hook and Fort Hamilton.
The neighborhood’s name was changed in the 1850s as the word “yellow” was associated with the yellow fever. Thus, the high ridge that offered views of the New York Bay became known as “Bay Ridge.”
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which can be seen from most of the neighborhood due to its low buildings, connects Brooklyn and Staten Island and was completed in 1964.
