Itinerary 3: Midtown West
Walk The High Line
In 1934, the “West Side Elevated Line” was a fully operational rail line that was used to transport millions of tons of meat, dairy, and produce. After years of decline, portions of the High Line were demolished and the remainder of the line was shut down by the 1980s. It wasn’t until 2009 that the first section of the High Line reopened as a public space for pedestrians to enjoy a unique view of the city. The High Line is now one, continuous, 1.45-mile-long greenway featuring 500+ species of plants and trees.
